Local SEO and GMB optimization for the map pack

When someone nearby searches for what you do, the map pack decides who gets the call. I optimize your Google Business Profile (still called GMB by most people), clean up your listings and build the local pages and links that help Google trust your business in your area.

In short

Local SEO helps a business appear when people nearby search for what it offers: in Google Maps, the local map pack and local organic results. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed, so the work goes into the other two: a complete, accurate Google Business Profile (the name for Google My Business since 2021), consistent listings across the web, genuine reviews, strong location pages and local links.

Included

What local SEO and GMB optimization includes

Profile audit and set-up

Business name as it appears in real life, categories, services, hours, attributes, description and photos, all checked against Google's guidelines.

Categories and services

Your primary category is one of the most important relevance signals you control. It's chosen from what you actually offer and what the businesses already in the top three use.

A review routine

A simple way to ask every real customer for a review, and a habit of replying. No bought or filtered reviews: they break Google's policies and, in the US, the FTC's rule on fake reviews.

Citations and NAP consistency

Your name, address and phone number made consistent across major directories and niche ones, such as legal directories for law firms.

Location and service pages

A page for each location or service area with unique content, LocalBusiness schema and clear contact details, linked from the matching profile.

Local links and mentions

Links from local news, associations, sponsorships and niche sites in your area: the part of prominence directories can't give you.

How the map pack ranks businesses

Google describes three main factors for local results: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the place named in the search) and prominence (how well known your business is, including reviews, links and articles). Google also says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

You can't move closer to every searcher, so local SEO works on relevance and prominence, and on making sure nothing on your profile holds you back.

Mistakes that cost map visibility

  • Keywords stuffed into the business name. It can work briefly, then leads to edits or suspension. Your name should match your signage and documents.
  • A broad primary category. A personal injury firm listed only as "Law firm" competes on a broader term than "Personal injury attorney".
  • Inconsistent details. Old addresses and phone numbers on directories confuse customers and Google alike.
  • Every profile linking to the homepage. Multi-location businesses should link each profile to its own location page.
  • No review routine. A profile whose reviews stopped arriving looks inactive next to competitors.

Local SEO for law firms

Law is one of the most competitive local categories. Firms need the right practice-area category, attorney profiles that follow Google's rules for individual practitioners, consistent listings on legal directories such as Avvo, Justia and FindLaw, and practice-area pages that answer local questions. I've run local SEO campaigns at an agency and write content for US personal-injury firms, so the profile, the pages and the links are planned together. Legal links come from law guest posts.

Process

How local SEO projects run

  1. Audit

Your pages, rankings and competitors are reviewed, and every issue is logged with its fix.

  2. Prioritize

You get a plan ordered by impact and effort, so the biggest wins come first.

  3. Fix

I make the changes, or give your team clear instructions, with rewrites where needed.

  4. Track

Rankings, clicks and visibility are tracked, and you get a report on what changed.

FAQ

Questions about local SEO

Is GMB the same as Google Business Profile?

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in November 2021. Most people still search for "GMB optimization", and it means the same thing.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile fixes, such as a better primary category or corrected details, can show an effect within weeks. Competitive markets like legal usually take several months of reviews, content and links. It depends on your competition and location, so no fixed timeline is promised.

Can you help with a suspended profile?

I can review the likely cause, fix what broke the guidelines and help you prepare a reinstatement request with the evidence Google asks for. Reinstatement is Google's decision.

Do you work with service-area businesses?

Yes. Businesses that visit customers can hide their address and set service areas instead, and the location pages are planned around those areas.

Can you get us more reviews?

I set up a simple process for asking real customers and replying to reviews. I don't write, buy or filter reviews: fake reviews break Google's policies and, in the US, the FTC's rule on fake reviews.
